Austin Vegan Friendly Guide

This started as a SXSW guide but I thought I would keep it up for people visiting our fair city and it’s grown and grown. Here is a simpler list of 100% vegan places. And my Vegan Tour of Austin. Also here is a late night guide. And let me know in the comments if you hear something, it’s gotten tough to keep up with. People ask me all the time to make this an app but I don’t know how! I do know on my iphone I can navigate to this page on safari and then press the button that says “add to home screen” under the box with the arrow and then my logo shows up right on the phone. It’s super helpful when you are in a strange part of town.

Jump to Downtown, West, South, The Drag, East, Southeast, North, Round Rock

Breakfast tacos are key, in fact, our fair city runs on breakfast tacos. Check out my Austin Vegan Taco Guide over here!

The list starts with places that are walking distance to the convention center and moves out from there with an emphasis on late night places. And remember this is all my opinion and what I like or have heard about. I haven’t even been to all of these places! If you have anything to add or questions please comment at the bottom, I continuously update the list.

PizzaRev– Vegan dough at this custom pizza spot has daiya cheese for $1 more and unlimited toppings.

Jack Allen’s Kitchen– Andrew says “no vegan menu, however, my wife and I had our reception dinner here and they made our family an amazing off menu (we planned way in advance) beet and butternut squash ravioli along with some insane appetizers.”

Awesome list! Going to print it out and stick it in my back pocket while I’m volunteering at SXSW in case anybody asks me about food!

Great list! I live here in Austin and have been looking for a good list of vegan restaurants. Thanks, but I heard elsewhere that the buns at Hut’s aren’t vegan. I’ll ask next time I’m there.

they probably change back and forth because they have different distributors so definitely check, but several different people told me that the buns are vegan

SpaIndex.com is building a “niche category” for Vegan Spas and they have a Texas entry, the Nature Co spa. Do you guys know of any others?

I just tried Takoba, having heard it was vegetarian-friendly. But the queso contains chorizo, and the rice has chicken stock. They offer a whopping TWO vegetarian entrees to choose from. True, the items are clearly marked, but big fricking deal. Vegetarian friendly my ass.

Meanwhile, at Péché (also listed above) you’ll find such delicacies as tongue and unspeakables served inside a bone. Maybe there are some veggie options too, but good luck maintaining an appetite.

I went to 24 Diner the other day and was told their bread is not vegan. There is a dish simply called Roasted Vegetables that can be made vegan, and it’s actually pretty good.

Check out Taj Palace (www.tajpalaceaustin.net) located at 6700 Middle Fiskville Road. They serve North Indian vegetarian options, have a lunch buffet, and provide catering for events.

Don’t forget the portobello fajitas at Trudy’s. Just tell them “no dairy anywhere on the plate”, otherwise thay’ll bring vegan fajitas with dair on the side of beans. I’ve constantly had horrible service at the South location and now I will only go to the North location even though I live in South Austin.

Also, don’t forget El Mercado (or did I miss it?)

The woman behind Grandma’s Hummus (the BEST hummus in the world…even my Turkish SIL says it’s great AND my world traveler friend said she hasn’t had better hummus, even in places like Morocco and Greece!) has a cafe in North Austin, just off Lamar/Koenig, with falafal wraps…yummy!!

LOVE this list. It’s really helped me choosing places to go eat here in Austin. I went to enchiladas y mas in north Austin today and the list says they have great veggie enchiladas. I suppose that’s true but by “veggie”it means cheese. They have nothing without meat or cheese on the menu but I ordered veggie fajitas for 7.50 which was wonderful with the best quacamole I’ve ever had. Just wanted to let you know!

Thank you so much for compiling this list! My husband and I now have no excuse when we are trying to decide where to go out. One thing I’d like to let you know is that on our last visit to Hey Cupcake! On S. Congress in June, we were told they no longer offer vegan options.

You should note that Polvos’ rice is not vegan; it is cooked using chicken stock. Also, be sure to order black beans since their pinto beans are not vegan either.

Some updates for you: Peppers Indian was a favorite our ours but it closed a long time ago. We tried Premier Raw in the last two weeks and they were closed and had a sign saying they were revamping the menu. They didn’t say when they would reopen, but we hope it is soon! Maria’s Taco express has some dishes that can be made vegan.

Phonatic- Same as those in Austin.

Mellow Mushroom- Dough is vegan if you ask them for no butter or parmesan, they have daiya cheese, tempeh, and tofu. They also offer calzones.
Verts- Same as those in Austin

This DC foodie is visiting Austin next week, mostly just to eat food. This listing is AMAZING! Unfortunately I’ve only got 6 days in Austin this time…but I’m going to try to get the biggest vegan bang for my buck. Thanks for all the effort put into this list!

I didn’t see Mission Dogs on E Cesar Chavez. The brick & Mortar is 1701 and they have a cart too! They advertise on their bacon wrapped hot dogs but they also have vegan dogs that can be substituted for any option as well as vegan sirach mayo and wasabi mayo. Just had vegan mozzarella garlic hand cut fries. Awesome!

Coming from Philly to Austin this September – Love to be near a Whole Foods and love vegan Mexican food – suggestions on places to stay

    Reply
    1. lazysmurf Post author

There are Mexican places all over. My favorite is tacos at Vegan Nom but there is also Cool Beans which is at Spiderhouse along with Arlo’s & Milkyway Shakes. That’s also right by Wheatsville which is our local food co-op which is way better than Whole Foods. They have tons of awesome vegan options like buffalo popcorn tofu. So I’d say find an Airbnb around there. Otherwise the big Whole Foods downtown.

Hi there! Great list. I work at a couple of these restaurants and had some updates. Sa-Ten has a tofu teriyaki dish, a grilled vegetable plate, and potato wedges that are vegan, but we no longer carry red rabbit doughnuts as they closed a couple years ago. We also have a second location at 4917 Airport Blvd with most of the same menu items and plant based milks!

Additionally, Kome has moved from 4917 Airport Blvd to 5301 Airport Blvd, and is now open every day including Sunday. Also, the vegan ramen is now available at dinner time! There are still several vegan sushi menu items.

    Hope that helps!

Owner of Tso Chinese Delivery here! Great vegan list! We’ve opened a new location in the Northwest Austin, subsequently expanding our delivery area quite a bit: 9333 Research Blvd Bldg E, Ste 402, Austin, TX 78759.

It’s also important to note that deliveries are ALWAYS free, and that we do not accept tips.
